The film received critical acclaim for its cinematography, acting and plot. It was selected as the country’s entry for the Best Foreign Language at the 88th Academy Awards but it was not nominated.
Luna was a patriot, soldier, scientist and journalist.
A member of the propaganda movement, he wrote for the newspaper La Solidaridad under the pseudonym Taga-Ilog. He also founded the newspaper La Independencia upon his return to the country in 1898.
Luna, best known for his bravery and military tactics, was considered as one of the fiercest generals who became commander of the Philippine Revolutionary Army.
He was killed in Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija on June 5, 1899.
