Comelec: Voter registration off to good start
MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is expecting around 800,000 individuals to sign up for next year’s barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls as voter registration resumed yesterday.
“The first day of voter registration went smoothly. Various cities in Metro Manila are seeing massive numbers such as Makati and Taguig where around 200 people lined up to register,” Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said.
The barangay and SK elections have been reset to May 14, 2018.
Jimenez said the turnout of voter registration outside Metro Manila was low.
“Voter registration turnout usually increases as the deadline draws near. Those who missed the last registration earlier this year are expected to sign up now,” he said.
The registration will run for a month.
Jimenez said the Comelec expects less than 500,000 new registrants for the barangay elections and some 350,000 registrants for the SK polls.
Records showed there were 2,764,745 registrants during the last voter registration period conducted from November 2016 to April this year.
