LPA to bring rains in MM, other parts of Philippines

Rhodina Villanueva - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms will prevail today over Metro Manila, the Bicol region, Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog as well as in the provinces of Mindoro and Marinduque due to a low-pressure area spotted off Surigao City.

The weather disturbance may also trigger flashfloods and landslides, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The rest of Luzon will be cloudy with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms.

The Visayas and Mindanao will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Cagayan Valley, the Cordilleras and Ilocos region will experience light rains.

The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.

From Tuesday to Friday, the easterlies will bring partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies over the country with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, five barangays in Tampakan and the entire Tupi town, all in South Cotabato, have been placed under a state of calamity after rivers swelled due to heavy downpours spawned by Tropical Storm Ramil.

More that P10 million worth of crops were destroyed by the floods that hit the two municipalities, local officials said.

Emergency landing

Two pilots of the Philippine Air Force were injured when a PAF trainer plane made an emergency landing at a sugarcane plantation in Rosario, Batangas on Friday afternoon.

Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo yesterday afternoon identified the pilots as Maj. Gemar Tangacalagan and 1/Lt. Jaimaca Anne Acojedo.

The aircraft was flying over Sitio Villa Ilayang in  Barangay Colongan when the pilots decided to make an emergency landing at around 5:30 p.m.

Members of a search and rescue team rushed Tangacalagan and Acojedo to the Fernando Air Base Hospital in Lipa City for treatment. – With Jaime Laude, John Unson
