US deploys 'Gray Eagle' surveillance drone in Mindanao
MANILA, Philippines — The United States has deployed a surveillance drone to Mindanao in support of the counterterrorism efforts of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
The Gray Eagle unmanned aircraft system has longer flight duration, enabling it to cover a larger area of reconnaissance and surveillance, the US Embassy in Manila said.
The US has provided over P15 billion to the Philippines in the past three years to improve the AFP's command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities.
The Philippines recently acquired a radar blimp and two new Cessna 208B aircraft from the US, as well as additional munitions and weapons for urgent defense and counterterrorism.
"The strong, long-standing military relationship with the Philippines enables the U.S. to respond quickly to the AFP’s needs and to support the AFP’s modernization goals," the US Embassy said in a statement.
Last week, US Ambassador Sung Kim announced that Washington will provide P730 million (approximately $15 million) for ongoing relief operations and the rehabilitation program of Marawi City and nearby areas.
The fund will be used for humanitarian assistance and for the stabilization and rehabilitation of the city and surrounding areas following attacks of ISIS-inspired Maute terror group. — Patricia Lourdes Viray
