Navy to get new radar system from US

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Navy will acquire a new radar system from the United States, which is expected to further enhance the PN’s capability to guard and defend the country’s shores.

Navy officials are scheduled to receive the Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS), a self-sustained, unmanned Lighter-Than-Air (LTA) systems donated by the US government tomorrow in a turnover ceremony with US Deputy Embassy Chief of Mission to the Philippines Michael Klescheski and Philippine Navy Flag Officer In Command, Vice Adm. Joseph Ronald Mercado at the Naval Education and Training Command in San Antonio, Zambales.

The TARS is expected to boost the Navy’s capacity in maritime intelligence surveillance reconnaissance by effectively detecting maritime and air traffic within the country’s coastal waters using sensors.

The new radar system will also be utilized in the conduct of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response operations.
