MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Leni Robredo led the Independence Day rites at Rizal Park on Monday after President Rodrigo Duterte failed to attend as he wasn't feeling well.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Cayetano joined Robredo in the flag raising and wreath laying ceremony to mark the 119th Independence Day of the country.
Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella confirmed Duterte would not be able to attend the event, minutes before the ceremony started.
Cayetano said Duterte was not feeling well after visiting wounded soldiers in Cagayan de Oro City before flying to Villamor Airbase to honor the Marines who died in Marawi City.
