DepEd urges Marawi students to enroll in schools

Education Secretary Leonor Briones, in a press briefing in Malacañang on June 6, 2017, announces that she has ordered the removal of the documentary requirements for enrollment of students who were displaced due to the terror attack in Marawi City. She added that the students affected in the Marawi City terror attack shouldn’t be deprived of education; hence, they have made education more accessible to them.  Presidential Photo

MANILA, Philippines — Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones on Wednesday called on families who evacuated from Marawi City to enroll their children in the nearest schools where they are staying in.

As of Wednesday, DepEd recorded more than 2,000 students displaced after Marawi clash, most of them from northern Mindanao.

“Even as we were hoping that we would have delayed opening in Marawi, we cannot definitely say when,” Briones said in an interview with ANC's Headstart.

“This is because we have to wait for the military to give us the go signal because of the clearing and so on,” she added.

Briones said there is a significant number of Marawi children and students enrolled as far as Barangay Batac in Marawi City.

“So all over the country, we have them. And it is an indication of how they are already integrated particularly in NCR, Metro Manila, Region X and VII,” Briones said.

Maute Group, a local terrorist group in the Mindanao region, attacked Marawi City last May 23 that left hundreds of casualties, including military forces and civilians.

Following the attacks, President Rodrigo Duterte proceeded to the declaration of martial law in Mindanao and the suspension of the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus. — Ana Jacinta Olabre, intern
