MANILA, Philippines — Former Sen. Edgardo Angara has been named special envoy of the president to the European Union, appointment papers released by Malacañang showed.

Angara was appointed last May 3 and will handle the post until Sept. 30. His appointment came as Duterte is criticizing the EU for supposedly meddling in his war on illegal drugs.

Angara is the second former lawmaker to be appointed special envoy. Early this month, President Rodrigo Duterte designated former House Speaker Jose de Venecia, Jr. as special envoy to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation.

Malacañang had erroneously announced that de Venecia would serve as special envoy for inter-cultural dialogue.

Angara and de Venecia were among the 46 new Duterte appointees.

Also appointed were Brian Patrick Gordon, who has been named board member of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority. He is the son of Sen. Richard Gordon, a former chairman of SBMA.

Ranjit Shahani, son of the late Sen. Leticia Shahani and a former lawmaker, has been named board member of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office.

Former Davao City police chief Vicente Danao Jr. has been appointed commander of the National Anti-Illegal Drugs Task Force.

Danao became controversial in 2014 after a video showing him beating his wife circulated online. The police official claimed that he was just a victim of a set-up. Duterte, then the mayor of Davao City, defended Danao, saying the video had nothing to do with his work as police officer.
