Public warned on water-borne diseases this summer

MANILA, Philippines -  With cold drinks being sold everywhere, the Department of Health (DOH) has cautioned the public to be vigilant against water-borne diseases, especially this summer.

In an  interview on Monday, Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial said the proliferation of improvised stores selling “summer coolers” could pose threats to health.

Ubial cited diarrhea, salmonella, cholera and amoebiasis as among the diseases that could be acquired through unsafe food and water intake.

Ubial said proper handling and preparation of ingredients are important, aside from making sure that the water and even the ice used for cold drinks are safe.

“What is most important for food handlers is proper hand washing before handling the food and after using the toilet. They are also advised to use masks,” Ubial said.

The health chief urged the local government units to be vigilant in monitoring stores that sell cold drinks, halo-halo, mais con yelo, shakes, juices and ice scramble, among others.

“We need to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the food and drinks because we do not want our customers to get sick and we want to protect our (businesses) of course,” she added.
