PCG trains more K-9 dogs
MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) will train 35 more dogs in narcotics and explosives detection in its K-9 training facility in Romblon.
PCG spokesman Commander Armando Balilo said the canines were transported on BRP Pampanga along with their handlers from Manila to Romblon at around 1 p.m. yesterday.
Balilo said the training of the K-9 dogs would help boost the Duterte administration’s campaign against illegal drugs.
The government needs more dogs trained in sniffing bombs as well search and rescue operations to patrol seaports and other facilities, PCG K-9 unit head Capt. Nelson Torre said.
The PCG is currently handling 154 canines.
“We need to increase the number of highly trained dogs because they are not only used to patrol seaports but they also help ensure security at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Metro Rail Transit, Light Rail Transit and Philippine National Railway,” Torre said.
He said the K-9 dogs also help the Philippine National Police and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in their campaign against illegal drugs and anti-terrorism efforts.
