MANILA, Philippines – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) received P1.48 million in donations from private firms this Christmas season despite the “no-gift policy” being imposed by the Civil Service Commission (CSC).

MMDA officer-in-charge Tim Orbos said a private citizen donated accident insurance benefits worth P480,000 while another gave 100 units of mobile radios with an estimated value of P1 million.

Orbos refused to disclose the identities of the donors as they requested anonymity.

He said the insurance benefit’s validity starts on Jan. 1. The turnover for mobile radio is being facilitated.

More than 6,000 personnel of the MMDA composed of traffic enforcers, street sweepers, Pasig River Ferry personnel and clearing operations team will benefit from the insurance policy.

Orbos said he accepted the donations because it is needed by the traffic enforcers and other field personnel whose nature of jobs exposed them to risk.

He said he would ask the national government to grant MMDA field workers with benefits similar to what police officers and soldiers are receiving.

Aside from mobile radios and insurance benefits, Orbos said the agency also received raincoats, jackets and helmets from private citizens.

He said the MMDA did not violate any law when it accepted the donations, as it was meant to improve public service.
