2,400 Filipinos in Fukushima safe after earthquake

MANILA, Philippines -- The 2,400 Filipinos residing in Fukushima are safe after an earthquake hit Japan according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
"Filipino residing in affected areas are safe, with some staying in evacuation areas," the DFA said in a statement.
No injuries or casualties have been reported as the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo continues to communicate with concerned local government agencies in Japan, the department also said.
A 7.4-magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Fukushima early Tuesday morning at 5:59 a.m., Japan time, which strongly affected the Fukushima, Tochigi, and Ibaraki prefectures.
Tsunami warnings were also issued immediately in Fukushima and Miyagi, where the coastal areas were evacuated.
The Philippine Embassy will continue to closely monitor the situation on the ground while keeping in touch with the Filipino community leaders residing in affected areas.
According to the DFA, there are currently 237,103 Filipinos residing in Japan with 9,074 in Ibaraki and 4,438 in Tochigi, prefectures also affected by the earthquake.
Another 1,200 Filipinos live in Miyagi and 1,079 are in Iwate.
