MANILA, Philippines – The prices of flowers shoot up in Manila’s flower markets as All Soul’s Day draws near.

According to radio reports, flower prices at Sampaloc, Manila’s Dangwa Flower Market went up by 20 percent. The market is known for selling imported and local flowers.

Prices of a dozen roses went up from the regular price of P150 to P250 to P300 for white roses and P300 to P350 for red roses. On the other hand, a dozen Malaysian mums, which normally costs P100, is now priced at P140 to P180.

Florists said a dozen anthuriums, originally priced at P150, now sells at  P350-P450 per basket. Chrysanthemums are now  priced at P180 to P200, carnations at P180 to P250 and orchids at P400 to P500. A bundle of gerbera and a stem of stargazer sell from P150 to P200.

Meanwhile, the Department of Trade and Industry said there is a price freeze on candles as these were not only intended for the observance of All Soul’s Day but also for the victims of recent typhoons whose access to electricity may have been cut off. The agency urged the public to report any price hike on candles.

Flower and candle adornments are allowed in cemeteries. However, the authorities ban alcoholic beverages, deadly weapons as well as pets inside the lots.
