MANILA, Philippines – An injunction will be filed before the Supreme Court (SC) seeking to stop President Duterte’s decision allowing a hero’s burial for the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

More groups opposed yesterday the scheduled interment of Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani on Sept. 18, saying the former president does not deserve a hero’s burial.

Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, who served as budget undersecretary during the term of former president Cory Aquino, said they would ask the high court to issue an injunction to stop Marcos’ burial in Libingan.

“President Duterte’s decision should not be arbitrary and absolute. An independent body such as the SC can intervene to stop the desecration of the heroes’ cemetery,” Lagman said.

Lagman said they would enumerate 12 “cardinal sins” of Marcos that make him unfit for a hero’s burial, including the declaration of martial law and amassing of alleged ill-gotten wealth estimated at $30 billion.

Lagman added that Marcos was “ousted as a tyrant by a people revolution.”

He said they would also cite the recommendations of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) that Marcos should not be given a hero’s burial. – With Marvin Sy, Rhodina Villanueva, Janvic Mateo
