MANILA, Philippines -- Airport authorities reopened Runway 06-24 at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport late Monday night after emergency repairs.

The Manila International Airport Authority said the runway was reopened at 10:45 p.m. on Monday, adding diverted flights were expected to arrive shortly.

The closure caused flight diversions, with Airbus A320s and smaller aircraft being told to use Runway 13/31 instead. Other aircraft were diverted to the Clark International Airport in Pampanga.

The runway closure also led to 14 international flights across the Ninoy Aquino International Airport's three terminals being canceled.

NAIA sources said the runway was apparently damaged by flash floods that submerged some portions during heavy rains. MIAA authorities implemented emergency runway closure immediately due to softness in the main runway to avoid damage to aircraft.
