MANILA, Philippines – German Chancellor Angela Merkel has congratulated president-elect Rodrigo Duterte, even as she emphasized that democracy and human rights are “indispensable” and serve as the foundation for deepening ties between the Philippines and Germany.
In a congratulatory letter, Merkel told Duterte that cooperation between the two countries is characterized by friendship and trust.
“That includes our shared conviction that democracy, human rights, the rule of law and inclusive economic growth are indispensable for sustainable development. I am sure that we will continue to deepen our relations on this foundation,” Merkel said.
She expressed hope that the peace process in Mindanao would soon lead to a lasting and peaceful settlement.
A strong supporter of the peace process, Germany provided funds for the promotion of peace and development in Mindanao through development cooperation programs.
As a significant member-state of the European Union, Germany plays an important role in the International Monitoring Team.
It urged the Philippines to push the peace process forward and expressed support for the passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law, which will implement the peace agreement signed by the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
