MANILA, Philippines — Vice Presidential candidate Sen. Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. insisted he could not apologize for anyone else's human rights violations.

Speaking at the Commission on Elections-initiated vice presidential debate on Sunday, Marcos said he recognized every administration's violations against rights but he failed to directly refer to those done under the martial rule of his father, President Ferdinand Marcos.

"I have said this before and I will say it again, I will apologize for any wrong doings that I may have done, any mistakes that may have caused anyone pain or hardship but I can only apologize for myself," Marcos said.

"I cannot apologize for anyone else, only myself and for what I have done," he added.

Marcos said he acknowledges every human right in every administration. He also said government should not repeat mistakes and abuses of the past.

The senator also protested that no human rights complaints have been raised against him during his 27 years of public service. He lamented, however, that he is now made to answer rights allegations.

Camarines Sur Rep. Maria Leonor "Leni" Robredo, meanwhile, found Marcos's lack of remorse worrisome, saying apology is voluntarily given and cannot be forced.

Robredo said it is also not enough to recognize hidden wealth, but government should demand for its return to the country's treasury.
