Former Senator Jovito Salonga passes away at 95
MANILA, Philippines — Former Senate President Jovito Salonga passed away on Thursday at the age of 95.
"His passing marks the departure from this life of another of those brave, committed individuals who lit a candle during the deep darkness of the dictatorship; and who contributed to the restoration of our democratic way of life after the triumph of People Power," Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a statement.
Salonga was the leading opposition leader during the regime of the late President Ferdinand Marcos. He was elected president of the Liberal Party in 1985.
He was the first chairman of the Presidential Commission on Good Government which was tasked to investigate and recover the alleged ill-gotten wealth of Marcos. He served as Senate president from 1987 to 1992.
Salonga lost the 1992 presidential election, finishing sixth in a seven-person race.
