Workers to get extra pay on Chinese New Year

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Workers who will opt to work on Chinese New Year will receive holiday pay, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced yesterday.

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the DOLE has issued pay rules for the Chinese New Year to guide employers in giving their workers proper wages and benefits.

“As we join the Chinese-Filipino community in celebrating the Spring Festival, popularly known as Chinese New Year, we must give workers in the private sector proper holiday pay,” Baldoz said.

Chinese New Year, which falls on Feb. 8, is a non-working holiday.

Baldoz said those who would report to work are entitled to receive 30 percent of their daily rate for the first eight hours of services rendered on the day.

Those who would work for more than eight hours shall be paid an additional 30 percent of hourly rate, Baldoz said.

An employee who will decide to work during the special holiday, which falls on his rest day, will be paid an additional 50 percent of daily rate on the first eight hours of work.
