Gov't execs, cops among 507 nabbed gun ban violators

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday said it arrested more than 500 election gun ban violators.

As of 8 a.m. on Sunday, PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Wilben Mayor said that from the 396 arrested on Wednesday, persons who were found carrying firearms increased to 507 during the election gun ban period.

Mayor said 490 of the 507 apprehended are civilians while two are police officers, four are government officials, six are security guards, four are employees of a law enforcement agency and two are members of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit.

The officer said the PNP also confiscated 304 firearms, 3,028 deadly weapons, 14 grenades, seven other explosives, 12 firearm replicas and 2,995 ammunitions since January 10.

The election gun ban period started January 10 and will last until June 10.

The firearm prohibition is being implemented by the Commission on Elections, Philippine National Police and other law enforcement agencies for the upcoming national and local elections on May 9.
