Mar issues debate challenge; Rody accepts
MANILA, Philippines – Liberal Party (LP) presidential candidate Mar Roxas yesterday said he will not back down from any debate or face-to-face discussion with his rivals in the 2016 elections.
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte yesterday accepted his challenge to a debate.
“When the political campaign starts, I will debate with them on any matter under the sun,” Duterte said.
Roxas issued the statement after attending several presidential forums that were organized in such a way that the candidates do not debate with each other.
“I don’t retreat from any debate. We’ve always attended all these forums,” Roxas told reporters in San Fernando City in Pampanga.
He said he also welcomed the call of Vice President Jejomar Binay for a political ceasefire, but added that the campaign should discuss relevant and substantial issues close to the hearts of the people.
“The candidate must be able to say clearly where he or she intends to bring the country. We must talk about the dreams of 100 million Filipinos – not just say what one’s going to do. But give exact details,” Roxas said.
He said he was surprised by the tirades of Duterte against him, adding that the selection of the next leader is too important to discuss trivial matters like slapping.
“If the issue he raised are shallow, let’s ask him about how he intends to handle the economy,” Roxas said.
