MANILA, Philippines – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Saturday vowed to abide with the Christmas suspension of offensive operations against the New People’s Army declared by President Benigno Aquino III.
The suspension of military operation (SOMO) will be in effect from Dec. 23, 2015 to Jan. 3, 2016.
“This unilateral declaration of SOMO was recommended by the Department of National Defense, AFP public affairs office chief Col. Noel Detoyato said. “It only covers military operations against the NPA.”
The ceasefire does not include law enforcement operations of the Philippine National Police which the AFP supports against threat groups and other wanted personalities.
Detoyato said the SOMO will allow soldiers to spend the holidays with their loved ones and for NPA members to reflect on peace.
“We call on them to surrender, abandon the armed struggle and ultimately return to the fold of law,” Detoyato added. – with a report from PNA
