MANILA, Philippines – Tropical storm Nona (international name Melor) lost speed but maintained its strength as it moved closer to Bicol region and Samar, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

In its 11:00 a.m. weather bulletin, PAGASA said the storm was moving at 17 kilometers per hour (kph) still in a west northwest direction.

Nona has maintained its strength, packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 80 kph.

It was last spotted 1,025 kilometers east of Maasin City, Southern Leyte as of 10:00 a.m.

PAGASA said that it is possible that public storm warning signal No. 1 will be raised over Bicol region and Samar by Sunday morning.

The weather bureau advised the public and the disaster risk reduction and management council to take appropriate actions and watch for the next advisory at 11:00 p.m. Saturday.

Nona initially named “Nonoy” is the 14th cyclone to enter the Philippines this year.
