PhlPost releases wildlife stamps
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Postal Corp. (PHLPost) has launched the Philippine wildlife stamps series to raise awareness on four endemic animals at risk of extinction.
Colorful designs of the Philippine Flower Pecker, Philippine Sail-Fin Lizard, Philippine Pangolin and Freshwater Purple Crab are featured in PHLPost’s fourth quarter topical stamps.
The Philippine Flower Pecker is found in Western Visayas. The Philippine Sail-Fin Lizard lives near rivers in tropical forests, while the Philippine Pangolin and Freshwater Purple Crab are endemic to Palawan province.
In recent years, however, these animals have been threatened by habitat loss and hunting.
For this reason, “PHLPost supports the education and information campaign of the government and the private sector in preserving and protecting our country’s wild species of animals at risk of extinction,” PHLPost Postmaster General Ma. Josefina dela Cruz said in a statement.
The Philippines is considered one of the mega-diverse countries in the world. Its more than 7,100 islands have many endemic species of plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.
