Poe camp: We will respect Tatad's opinion

MANILA, Philippines - The camp of presidential aspirant Sen. Grace Poe on Monday stated that they will respect the disqualification case filed by former Sen. Francisco "Kit" Tatad before the Commission on Elections.

Poe's legal counsel, George Garcia, said in a statement that the former senator is entitled to his opinion.

"Every Filipino has the right to avail remedies afforded by law... In the end, the rule of law prevails and the vibrancy of our democracy is sustained," Garcia said.

Garcia pointed out that the senator has met all requirements to run as president in the 2016 national elections.

Tatad argued that Poe is not qualified to run for president as she is not a natural-born Filipino and she failed to satisfy the 10-year residency requirement.

Losing senatorial candidate and presidential aspirant Rizalito David earlier filed a disqualification case against Poe before the Senate Electoral Tribunal.

Tatad and David are both represented by lawyer Manuelito Luna, according to a report.

Last Friday, lawyer Estrella Amparo also filed a petition before the Comelec seeking to invalidate Poe's candidacy.

Amparo argued that Poe is not a natural-born Filipino citizen since she is a foundling. She stressed that international treaties on stateless persons are not sufficient to grant the senator the status of a natural-born citizen.
