Poe faces new DQ case before Comelec

Patricia Lourdes Viray - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines - Presidential aspirant Sen. Grace Poe faces another disqualification case as former Sen. Francisco "Kit" Tatad files a petition before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Monday.

Tatad cited in his petition that Poe is not a natural-born Filipino and that she failed to satisfy the ten-year residency requirement to run for president.

The senator will be "perpetually barred from seeking public office" if the Comelec decides to rule in favor of Tatad.

Last August, defeated senatorial bet Rizalito David filed a disqualification case against Poe before the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET).

David seeks to unseat Poe from the Senate, also citing her citizenship and residency issue.

The SET eventually ruled out the presidential aspirant's residency issue and decided to focus on her citizenship instead.

The Comelec, however, clarified that Poe may still file a certificate of candidacy for president despite the disqualification case filed against her before the SET.

Last Friday, lawyer filed a petition before the Comelec seeking to invalidate Poe's candidacy.
