Ombudsman part of conspiracy to destroy me – Binay

MANILA, Philippines - Vice President Jejomar Binay accused yesterday Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales of being part of a “conspiracy” to destroy his chances of winning the presidency in 2016.

Binay said he has read the ombudsman’s order recommending the filing of graft charges against him and his son, suspended Makati City Mayor Junjun Binay, and 22 others in connection with the alleged overpricing of Makati City Hall Building II.

“What’s the basis of their resolution? The allegations against me? Because up to now that’s still being deliberated on by COA (Commission on Audit). It’s very obvious this is politically motivated,” Binay told reporters in an interview in Mandaluyong City.

The Vice President said the ombudsman’s ruling is part of the “demolition by perception” being waged against him by his opponents.

“Why did they include me when they know that I’m immune from lawsuit? Because their intention is to destroy me, that’s why they included me in the resolution,” he said.

In a statement, Binay said the ombudsman has not found evidence which will prove that he had benefited from the project.

“They did not see evidence that will support the allegations against me in the Senate and media,” the Vice President said.

“This is what we’ve been saying for the longest time, this is pure noise without substance. And the ombudsman is part of the conspiracy to destroy me because I am a candidate for president,” he said.

Binay said he is saddened by the fact that government institutions are now being used to destroy and harass those who are not allied with the administration.

Meanwhile, the Vice President shrugged off yesterday Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV’s claim that he would back out from the presidential race in December and would be replaced by former President and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada. – With Christina Mendez
