MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno Aquino III wants resigning Trade and Investment Secretary Gregory Domingo to stay in his post until the country finishes hosting this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings.

Aquino said he will meet with Domingo this week as the date of the effectivity of his resignation is yet to be determined.

"Baka tatapusin muna 'yung APEC, baka hanggang katapusan ng taon," Aquino said in an interview with reporters in Iloilo.

"Wala pa kaming pinagkasaraduhang kung anong petsa pero 'yung inaasahan ko sa kanya na talagang hindi niya tayo iiwan na ‘yung matindi pa ang pangangailangan sa serbisyo niya," he added.

Aquino said Domingo had long desired to quit his post and return to the private sector.

The president thanked Domingo for the achievements of the Department of Trade and Industry under his watch.

He cited the record high $6.2 billion in foreign direct investments the Philippines achieved in 2014.

"We would like to thank Secretary Domingo for all of the work that he has done on behalf of the country," Aquino said.

Aquino said he will ask Domingo to recommend his possible replacement. - Louis Bacani
