LGUs asked to pass ordinances requiring water conservation
MANILA, Philippines -Water service concessionaires have urged local government units in Metro Manila and nearby provinces to pass ordinances advocating responsible water use amid a looming water shortage due to the prevailing strong El Niño.
Maynilad Water Services Inc. water supply operations manager Ronaldo Padua said the company sees further reduction of water allocation for Metro Manila from 38 cubic meters per second to 30 cms.
“On the supply side, it’s (water supply at Angat Dam) more severe than the 2010 El Niño,” Padua said in a recent media forum.
The National Water Resources Board (NWRB) has approved the reduction of water supply for Metro Manila households from 41 cms to 38 cms beginning Sept. 1.
Because of this, many areas will experience lower water pressure, while others will have shortened water service hours.
Maynilad announced on Friday that shortened water supply schedules would be implemented starting Sept. 16 in the west zone of Metro Manila, affecting 900 barangays.
Affected cities in the metropolis are Manila, Quezon City, Makati, Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon.
