MANILA, Philippines - The military remains optimistic that government forces will catch up with Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founder Nur Misuari, the alleged mastermind of the bloody Zamboanga siege two years ago.
Armed Forces chief Gen. Hernando Iriberri said the military is continuously supporting the police in its law enforcement operations against the Moro leader.
“Whoever you are, as long you are a criminal, the long arm of the law will ultimately catch up with you,” Iriberri said
“We are supporting the police on this matter so definitely, there will be positive results,” he added.
Iriberri, however, could not say when authorities would bring Misuari to justice.
“We cannot make a guess on that, but as we said, the long arm of the law will reach him,” the military chief said.
Misuari is facing rebellion charges over the attempted takeover of the Zamboanga City hall on Sept. 9, 2013.
The month-long crisis started when his followers tried to hoist their flag at the city hall and held hostage several civilians.
A series of clashes between the Misuari group and state forces ensued, leaving 105 rebels, 11 civilians, nine soldiers, and five policemen dead.
Two years have passed since the crisis but Misuari remains at large.
Security forces believe Misuari and his followers are still hiding in Sulu.
