MANILA, Philippines - The low pressure area outside the Philippine area of responsibility has intensified into a tropical depression (international name "Etau"), PAGASA said on Monday.
However, the weather bureau clarified that the tropical depression has a slim chance of entering the country as it is moving upward toward Japan.
It was located 1,795 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph). It is likely to move north northwest at 15 kph.
The tropical depression will be called "Jenny" once it enters PAR. The weather bureau is continuing to monitor the tropical depression.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon or "habagat" is expected to bring occasional rains over Visayas, Mindanao and the provinces of Mindoro and Palawan.
The rest of the country will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with possible isolated rains due to localized thunderstorms, PAGASA added.
