MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino will lead today’s ceremonies at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City commemorating National Heroes’ Day, where he will also offer flowers to honor the unknown soldier who offered his life for the country.
Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff Gen. Hernando Irriberi, Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano, Rep. Lino Cayetano and Ma. Serena Diokno of the National Historical Commission will accompany the President.
The diplomatic corps will also be around to witness the annual ceremonies at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Fort Bonifacio. Aquino will also have a wreath–laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
“Sa araw na ito marapat na bigyang pugay ang ating mga bayani na nagbuwis ng kanilang buhay upang ipaglaban, itaguyod, at itanghal ang ating kasarinlan na siyang naging pundasyon ng ating tinatamasang pag-unlad (This day, we praise the heroes who gave their lives to fight and uphold our freedom that is the foundation of the progress we now enjoy),” Press Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said.
Coloma expressed hope that the country’s heroes would inspire Filipinos to seek better lives for their families.
This year’s theme is “Bayaning Pilipino Noon at Ngayon: Ang Simula at Tagapagpatuloy ng Malawakang Pagbabago (The Filipino Hero Then and Now: Where Transformation Begins and Continues).”
There will also be full military honors and a 21-gun salute upon Aquino’s arrival.
