Marvin Sy - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino has declared October 2015 to October 2016 as the Centennial Year of the Philippine Senate.

Aquino signed on Aug. 7 Proclamation No. 1091 recognizing the Senate as “a revered democratic institution that consistently upholds the national interest, protects civil, political and human rights, and promotes transparency and accountability in public service.”

The Senate celebrates its centennial anniversary today.

The President deemed it fitting to honor the institution’s history and contribution to economic development, social justice and political maturity, and its defense and promotion of democratic values.

As part of the Centennial Year declaration, all the departments, bureaus, offices, national government agencies, local government units, government-owned and controlled corporations were enjoined to give support, assistance and cooperation in the observance of this event.

The Postmaster General was ordered to come out with a special stamp commemorating the occasion.
