Garbage collectors now need Tesda certification

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Garbage collectors will undergo training and get a certification from the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.

TESDA is offering training regulations on courses of garbage collection and sanitary landfill operations to enable proper waste collection and safe garbage disposal, according to director-general Joel Villanueva.

It would soon offer two courses in selected technical vocational institutions that were approved last June, he added.

Graduates would be assessed and certified after undergoing training, Villanueva said.

“We want to make the job dignified by making it a full-fledged occupation,” he said.

Garbage collectors will be trained in the proper and safe handling and disposal of waste to help ease the impact of garbage on the environment, Villanueva said.

“Concerns relating to environmental protection and sustainability have led to more emphasis in the area of solid waste management,” he said.

The training for garbage collection covers competencies relating to the collection, transport and dumping of garbage, particularly municipal or city wastes, Villanueva said.
