Philippines to host APEC dialogue at PICC next week

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - At least 40 foreign delegates from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) will gather at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City on Aug. 13 and 14 for the first high-level dialogue on science and technology.

Co-hosting the event are the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

The dialogues seek to strengthen multi-lateral cooperation on advancing science and technology in higher education in APEC-member communities, CHED Chairman Patricia Licuanan said during the pre-event press briefing in Quezon City yesterday.

“(The dialogue) is an earnest attempt to demonstrate the critical role of higher education as an important platform for the generation of new knowledge and the production of science and technology innovation,” she said.

Science Secretary Mario Montejo said boosting partnerships is significant to improve science and technology and higher education in the country.

“Our commitment to higher education stems from the constant need to develop skilled, highly trained knowledge workers with graduate degrees, conducting research and development activities in science and technology skills,” he said.

“Thus, our chances for boosting the country’s science and technology base shall ultimately rest on the quality of our students and workforce.”

Some 500 local participants from various sectors are expected to attend the dialogues.
