PAGASA: Philippines now experiencing mild El Niño

Patricia Lourdes Viray - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday confirmed that the Philippines is currently experiencing a mild case of El Niño.

A short dry spell may persist in some parts of the country and may prolong the dry season.

"Kaya nga ito tinawag na weak El Niño kasi hindi masyadong defined. It may not persist for so long and the impact may not be as significant as we expect," PAGASA climatologist Anthony Lucero in an interview with radio dzMM.

The weather may be warm starting on April due to El Niño.

PAGASA has earlier predicted that a mild El Niño may be experienced in the country as early as March.

According to a report, El Niño is caused by the disruption of the ocean-atmosphere system in the Tropical Pacific which affects the weather and climate around the globe.
