MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday maintained that the organization remains strong even with the absence of a chief.

During a press conference, PNP spokesperson Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr. admitted that having an officer-in-charge (OIC) has its limitations on the police force.

"May mga limitation ang isang pagiging OIC pero in terms of leadership, in terms of management, in terms of supervision ng mga operations ng PNP na pangkabuuan wala namang nararamdamang epekto given the good job being done performed by our OIC," Cerbo told members of the press.

Cerbo added that PNP OIC Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina was being supported by the command group, particularly directorial staff chief Deputy Director General Marcelo Garbo Jr.

Espina and Garbo were reportedly interviewed by President Benigno Aquino III as part of the search for the next PNP chief to replace resigned Director General Alan Purisima.

Cerbo noted that the both Espina and Garbo are worthy and qualified to be the next Police chief.  Aquino is set to appoint the replacement of Purisima.

"We will submit to the wisdom of the President," Cerbo said.
