MANILA, Philippines - The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Wednesday launched an all-out offensive against the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) to protect communities being attacked by the group.

Armed Forces chief of staff Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang ordered the Western Mindanao Command to launch an assault on the BIFF after it attacked civilians in Kabasalan Village in Pikit, North Cotabato.

The BIFF reportedly burned 17 houses in Brgy. Kabasalan after the civilians fled.

"I am saddened by the news that at least 20,000 people had been displaced by the violent attacks perpetrated by the BIFF in the hinterland villages. We will do our best to protect the people and allow them to go back to their homes," Catapang said.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel, AFP spokesperson Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc noted that 20,000 to 25,000 individuals were affected by the attacks of the BIFF.

"Right now, our forces are also coordinating with different local government officials to protect the displaced persons who are now taking shelter in evacuation centers in Pagalungan town also in Pikit town," Cabunoc added.

Catapang also ordered unit commanders to assist the Department of Social Welfare and Development and local government units of Pagalungan and Pikit in providing humanitarian assistance for the evacuees.

Unit commanders were also reminded to coordinate with the Philippine National Police in conducting law enforcement operations regarding cease-fire mechanisms to avoid clashes with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
