Camille Diola - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Pope Francis acknowledged the contribution of overseas Filipinos in his first address in the Philippines on Friday.

Speaking before President Benigno Aquino III, the diplomatic corps and government officials, the Roman Pontiff said that Filipinos abroad are key in the Philippines' role in "fostering understanding and cooperation" with other countries.

"I would also mention the oft neglected yet real contribution of Filipinos of the diaspora to the life and welfare of the society of which they live," the Pope said.

The Catholic Church's visible head also encouraged the Philippines' leaders to find inspiration in the "spiritual values" of the Filipinos around the world in providing "integral human development" to them.

"in this way, each person will be able to fulfill his or her potential and thus contribute wisely to the future of this country," he said.
