P-Noy to lead Rizal Day rites today
MANILA, Philippines - President Aquino will lead today’s ceremonies at the Rizal Monument in Rizal Park, Manila to commemorate the 118th anniversary of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal’s execution by firing squad during the Spanish regime.
This year’s theme is “Rizal 2014: Dunong at Pusong Pilipino.”
In a message, Aquino said Filipinos will discover an exemplar of citizenship in Rizal and in his triumphs and sacrifice.
“We imbibe the inspiration to continue the fight for the Filipino,” he said.
“The Filipino people stand united in celebrating the life of a man who, throughout his life, sought to uplift the circumstances of his motherland and fellows: We honor Gat Jose Rizal – his courage, deeds and generosity of spirit.
“May this commemoration invigorate and impassion us as a people, that we may remain unwavering in the duty to bequeath succeeding generations with the dignified, progressive future they deserve.”
Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said Aquino will be at Rizal Park at 7 a.m. to preside over the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies.
“It is an appropriate time to remember what Dr. Jose Rizal stood for: bravery, integrity, an undying love for country and the firm belief that national progress requires good citizenship, recognizing that freedom carries with it responsibilities,” he said.
“It is through embodying the values and lessons of civic consciousness that we have learned from Rizal that we can further accelerate our journey along the straight path to progress, and achieve our collective goal of a more inclusive and more prosperous Philippines.”
Rizal will be remembered and recognized for his staunch devotion to truth and justice in the face of Spanish abuses.
Armed Forces chief Gen. Gregorio Catapang will accompanying Aquino.
Full military honors and a 21-gun salute will be made at Rizal Park for the occasion.
Maria Serena Diokno, National Historical Commission of the Philippines chairman, and executive director Ludovico Badoy will also be present.
Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada is also expected at the ceremonies.
Order of the Knights of Rizal supreme commander Jeremias Singson will also be present.
