MANILA, Philippines — President Benigno Aquino III on Tuesday declared January 15, 16 and 19 as special, non-working holidays in Metro Manila.

The declaration, signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. on Monday, gives way to the visit of Pope Francis, Vatican City's head of state.

"I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the Republic of the Philippines to be affixed," Ochoa said in the declaration.

Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada in November declared a four-day holiday in the capital city from January 15 to 19 next year in an effort to ensure the security of the Roman Pontiff during his visit.

The Philippine National Police earlier activated its Joint Task Force Papal Visit 2015 to ensure public safety during the papal visit. The Presidential Security Group was tapped to serve as close-in security for the pope’s entourage.

Millions in Asia's Catholic stronghold are expected to crowd Manila to catch a glimpse of the pope.
