MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) yesterday said the Philippine diplomatic posts in Australia were still checking whether Filipinos were among the hostages held by an unidentified gunman at the Lindt Chocolat Cafe in Sydney.
“We are in close contact with our diplomatic posts in Canberra and Sydney, monitoring closely the unfolding events there,” DFA spokesperson Charles Jose said in a press briefing.
He said the Philippine consulate general in Sydney is also coordinating with the New South Wales police, who at press time were still in the process of determining the identities of the hostages.
The DFA urged members of the Filipino community in New South Wales to remain calm and vigilant as the Australian police continue to handle the situation.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Australia in this time of crisis and we hope that this unfortunate predicament will be resolved soon in a peaceful manner,” Jose said.
