MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - The Philippines government condemned today the brutal killing of American aid worker Peter Kassig by Islamic State militants in Syria.
"Such heinous acts have no place in civilized society. We reiterate our resolve to do our share in the fight against extremism, terrorism and crimes against humanity," the Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
It was reported earlier that a Filipino was among the ISIS militants who executed Syrian soldiers and Kassig by beheading.
British news Daily Mail published a photo of an Asian-looking man who is said to be one of the ISIS executioners.
The Philippine authorities could not confirm the report, but have acknowledged the potential threat to national security posed by Filipinos joining extremist groups overseas.
The Department of Foreign Affairs, in a previous statement, said Philippine security and intelligence authorities are monitoring possible recruitment by ISIS and other foreign extremist groups in the Philippines.
