Paeng intensifies into super typhoon

MANILA, Philippines - Typhoon Paeng (international name Nuri) intensified into a super typhoon yesterday as it continued to move away from the country.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the typhoon was spotted at 1,210 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan as of 4 p.m. yesterday, packing winds of 205 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 240 kph.

Paeng was forecast to move northeast at 15 kph, the state weather bureau said.

The US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning System said Paeng would further intensify while over the waters of the Pacific and reach maximum winds of 296 kph to become the year’s strongest cyclone.
