MANILA, Philippines - The scheduled Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections on Feb. 21, 2015 might be postponed to be synchronized with the barangay elections in October 2016.
The House of Representatives Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms approved the substitute measure which will be scheduled for plenary consideration.
The panel chairman Capiz Rep. Fredenil Castro noted that the substitute bill is a consolidation of House Bill (HB) 5006 and HB 5043 which does not cover the proposed reorganization of the youth council.
Castro reiterated that it is important to thoroughly scrutinize the proposed reform of the SK which is said to be "much-politicized" and "graft-tainted."
The SK elections was originally set on Oct. 28, 2013 but was postponed to Feb. 21, 2015 to allow Congress to reform the youth council.
