Public urged to support efforts to clean voters’ list
MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday appealed to the public to support efforts to clean the voters’ list by reporting to the poll body the active registration status of their dead relatives.
“We need the assistance of the public in determining if their dearly departed are still in the book of voters,” Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said in a statement.
“Please verify the registration status of your dearly departed loved ones using the Precinct Finder facility on the Comelec website,” he added.
If the registration status of a dead person is still active, a relative should report it immediately to the local Comelec office so that the name may be removed from the voters’ list.
According to Jimenez, the removal of the names of dead people from the book of voters is a crucial aspect in maintaining a clean and transparent voters’ list.
He stressed that ensuring a clean voters’ list is not only the duty of the Comelec, but the public as well.
“It is the duty of the living to vote and to make sure the dead are allowed to rest in peace,” he added.
