6 bets vie for CA post

Edu Punay - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Judicial and Bar Council has nominated six candidates for the vacancy in the Court of Appeals (CA) left by the retirement of Associate Justice Amelita Tolentino last July 4.

In the shortlist submitted to Malacañang yesterday were Judges Jeoffre Acebido, Perpetua Atal-Paño, Geraldine Fiel-Macaraig, Germano Francisco Legaspi, Ronaldo Marin and Ruben Reynaldo Roxas. They were chosen from 30 nominees.

President Aquino has 90 days, or until Dec. 29, to appoint the replacement of Tolentino.

Prior to his appointment to the CA in 2001, Tolentino was the regional trial court judge in Parañaque City who handled the June 1991 Vizconde massacre case. Tolentino convicted Hubert Webb, Peter Estrada, Hospicio Fernandez, Michael Gatchalian, Antonio Lejano II and Miguel Rodriguez in January 2000 for the massacre.
