Comelec still pushing for SK polls postponement

MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Elections still sees no need to prepare for the 2015 Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said the poll body would continue pushing for the postponement of the SK elections scheduled on Feb. 21 next year.

Brillantes said the commission is set to issue a formal resolution calling on Congress to postpone the SK elections so as not to interfere with preparations for the 2016 elections.

“Our official position is still to postpone the SK elections,” Brillantes explained.

Thus, he said, there is no need to immediately prepare for the SK elections even if Congress decides not to heed their proposal.

According to Brillantes, the Comelec needs only a month to prepare for the conduct of a manual SK elections next year.

“We will be ready when the time comes because manual elections require only a month or even less to prepare,” he said.

The Comelec, however, started the registration and will continue until Sept. 29 for qualified SK voters.

Qualified to register are any Filipino citizen that are at least 15 years old but below 18 years of age on Election Day, and are actually residing in the barangay for at least six months before Election Day.
