More areas under Signal No. 3 as 'Glenda' nears Legazpi

MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Glenda has slightly intensified as it approaches Legazpi City in Albay, state weather bureau PAGASA said on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the agency's weather bureau issued at 5 p.m., Glenda is now over the Albay Gulf or at 60 kilometers east of Legazpi City.

Glenda is now packed with maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gusts of up to 160 kph. It is forecast to move west northwest at 19 kph.

PAGASA said residents in low-lying and mountainous areas under the storm signals are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides. Those living in coastal areas under signal nos. 3 and 2 are also alerted against storm surges of up to three meters.

Moderate to intense rainfall (7.5 to 20.0 millimeters per hour) has been estimated within the 500-kilometer diameter of the typhoon.

The weather bureau said Glenda is expected to make landfall over Albay this evening then cross the Bicol region towards Southern Luzon.

Glenda is expected to pass Metro Manila before noon tomorrow and the vicinity of Bataan in the afternoon, moving towards the West Philippine Sea.

By Thursday afternoon, Glenda will be at 370 kilometers west of Sinait, Ilocos Sur and outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

PAGASA said fishing boats and other small seacrafts should not venture out into the eastern seaboards of Luzon and Visayas.
