Beijing wants unconditional release of boat, crew
MANILA, Philippines - Beijing has called for the “unconditional†release of a Chinese boat and crew, saying their seizure and arrest by Philippine authorities on disputed waters were illegal and invalid.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Hua Chunying said Friday that China again urged the Philippines to release the boat and its crew.
“Actions taken by the Philippines against Chinese fishermen are illegal and invalid. We urge once again the Philippine side to release unconditionally the Chinese boat and its crew, protect the safety and property of Chinese citizens and refrain from taking similar actions in the future,†Hua said in a press conference.
The Department of Foreign Affairs did not comment on China’s demand.
On Tuesday, the Philippine National Police-Maritime Command intercepted Qiongquionghai 09063 with 11 crew near Half Moon Shoal, an area close to Palawan.
Only 60 nautical miles from Palawan, Half-Moon or Hasa-Hasa shoal is included in China’s claim to almost the entire South China Sea.
China insisted it has indisputable sovereignty over Spratly Islands and adjacent waters, including Banyue Reef, China’s name for Half Moon Shoal.
It added that Chinese Coast Guard vessels arrived at the scene right after interdiction.
China protested on Wednesday the detention of 11 Chinese fishermen by Philippine authorities and the seizure of their fishing boat in the disputed South China Sea as Beijing accused Manila of “premeditated†provocative action.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Chinese embassy in Manila lodged representations with the Philippines, asking for immediate release of the Chinese boat and crew.
“China will reserve the right to take further actions,†Hua said.
